Joe Passov, a.k.a. “Travelin’ Joe,” joined Backspin The Golf Show in 2019. A Golf Writers Association of America (GWAA) and International Network of Golf (ING) award-winning journalist, he has been writing about golf since 1991. Perhaps best known for his popular “Ask Travelin’ Joe” columns, Joe has had more than 2,000 articles published in nearly 100 publications in North America, the U.K. and Asia, including The New York Times, Sports Illustrated, the Los Angeles Times and Men’s Health.
From 2005-2018, Joe served as Managing Editor for Travel and Course Rankings at GOLF Magazine and Golf.com. Prior to that appointment, Joe was Editor-in-Chief of LINKS magazine and was a senior staff editor at three other national magazines. Joe also served on the Golf Digest National Course Ranking Panel from 1987 through 1995. He remains the youngest panelist appointed in Golf Digest’s history. In addition, he was a member of the Golfweek Course Raters team from 2000-2005.
Joe has written, co-written or contributed to a half-dozen books, including club histories at Enhance Anting, in Shanghai, China, Hillcrest Country Club in Los Angeles and Mauna Kea Resort in Hawaii. An avid traveler, Joe’s journeys have provided him with golf experiences on more than 1,300 courses in all 50 states and 35 countries, and at more than 100 of the world’s top-ranked resorts. As a media member, he has attended 17 Masters, 13 U.S. Opens, seven Ryder Cups and many other significant events in professional and amateur golf.
In May 2019, the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA) honored Joe with the Donald Ross Award, for contributions to golf and to golf course design.
Joe graduated from the University of Arizona in 1984 and received his law degree from the University of Nebraska in 1988. He lives in Cave Creek, with his wife Betsy, mother-in-law Peg, six cats and a horse, “Danny Boy,” around the corner.
